Hello forum readers!
Is anyone willing to share thier experiences of implementing a drugs and alcohol testing policy for thier drivers/operators of machinery etc in the waste industry or local authority setting.
Any insights into problems/successes/failures etc would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Dazmo

on the face of it your question seems rather broad. I have experience of D&A testing and policies from two perspectives, the employee and the employer.
First, your company should have a D&A policy, which outlines the procedures and guidance that should be followed by all staff. Assuming that your company does or intends to use the services of a bonifed drugs and alcohol screening company, they should be able to assist you in most of your queries.
On a more personal note, implementing a D&A policy is fraught with problems and should only be undertaken if you are sure it is warranted. Problems can arise from the methods used for testing e.g. random testing, testing 'for cause' or after an incident. Then there is the morale perspective of helping people who may have an alcohol or drugs problem. I suggest you check out some information on the Internet, such as the TUC site, who have some interesting articles - Alcohol and Work is a Dangerous Cocktail.

I used to work in the UK and now work in the US.
In the UK I implemented a D&A abuse policy, although we never exercised it.
In the US we have a simple one.
Eveyone is drug tested within 24 hours of being sent a job offer.
If any operator of powered equipment is involved in an accident with a pedestrian, another piece of powered equipment or causes property damage in excess of $500 they are D&A tested the same day. Refusal of test is dismissal.
Becuase of use disability laws, if someone admits they have a drug problem prior to them being found out by a drug test, then there jobs are safe and they recieve counselling.
