Posted By Maj I have recently taken voluntary redundancy from MOD working in Defence Aviation. I was the head of Safety, Health, Environment and Fire (SHEF) for 4 sites covering the UK. Whilst over the 15 years that I have worked in this environment have been full of training courses of various description, including environmental qualifications and ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 development and implementation, I did not study the old Diploma 2 level required for the then Corporate memebership. I have just finished a PGc however, am awaiting results of this. On contacting IOSH membership recently was told that after completion of the PGC would have to spend some time in obtaining IPD and then CPD points, to gain firstly Grad OSH and finally CMIOSH. What value do IOSH put on the many years of experience I have working in medium and high risk environments, presenting to VIP's, Chief Executives and the like on SHEF and how can I obtain recognition through IOSH for this experience. When telephong IOSH for cIarification was told that there were 'moves afoot to deal with this'. I now feel that the experience that I have gained over the past 15 years in a health & safety role means nothing as I have to go through an Initial professional development period! The knock on to this is that recruiters are asking for this now, experience, coupled with a huge portfolio seems to account for nothing. Perhaps I should have just carried on doing training courses and not actually done the job. But right now I need to start earning money!

Experience and Qualifications prior to IOSH membership accounts for nothing IPD is king. Does anyone know what "moves afoot to deal with this"?? G'

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Maj Your need for IOSH related credibility and status should be a reflection of your intended work role. For a position as employee, I would suggest that you should be able to provide sufficient evidence of your stated competence by referencing your previous experience. If you intend to become a "Consultant", I believe that you should first seek good, impartial advice from people already in that area; and don't forget that consultants can be effectively hidden employees as well in my experience [I know that the IR read these to identify potential IR35 traders- it's no secret!]. The truth is that it takes time for anyone to achieve the status to which they aspire within any reputable professional body - whether it's IOSH or any other. For my money, any body that professes to be a serious professional organisation that allows, or encourages, the "walk in and be installed" approach is not a reputable body. I can only presume that you were not given access to sufficiently good advice on preparing for the commercial world. That's no help, I know. Please forgive the way that the following reads; I truly do not wish to be condescending and you do have my sympathy on this. As a major aspect of responsible safety management is tackling the issue of "foreseeability"; in hindsight, do you not consider that you should have commenced the approach to retirement and explored the various options and their implications rather more thoroughly and some considerable time earlier? Where are you based? I would suggest that you contact the local Branch and seek support for your application to the level of membership to which you apsire - and contact Hazel Harvey for a clear understanding of the options available to you. Posted By Hazel Harvey All, Just a word of clarification to deal with this. Experience is a very valued part of the IPD programme. Every person passing to 'Chartered' membership will be required to attend a peer review interview at which the experience of a person will be tested. However, experience is only one part of the whole IPD process you do need to have a recognised qualification and undertake the required elements based on your initial qualification. (Either an open assessment or a skills based portfolio). The normal IPD process is a minimum of two years, however, for members who have been TechSP this may be shortened but the required elements still have to be completed. The new membership structure required for us to be able to give 'Chartered' status does require the IPD process, the old structure which was a mixture of qualifcation and experience was not sufficiently robust to satisfy the requirments of the Privy Council. In this aspect IOSH is now similar to most other 'Chartered' professions. However, rest assured that experience is a very important part of the new process and it will have to be demonstrated. Posted By Stupendous Man Maj, If you were not already MIOSH, years of experience in high risk sectors do not count for very much of you do not have qualifications to complement them. They will, however, undoubtedly be of use when you get to the peer review.
