Colleagues
Does anyone know when the requirement to use lead free solder becomes/became law.
We have a electronic workshop which uses a reasonable amount of the stuff, have caried out coshh assesments & provided LEV, etc. We have by & large moved away to the lead free solution, but it is reasonable to assume that some lead stuff still exists.
I need to put together a breifing paper on this and would liek to include the relevent legal guidance.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

I don't think that there is a specific requirement to use lead-free solder but Reg 6 of CLAW requires employers to prevent exposure to lead or to adequately control exposure where prevention is not reasonably practicable.

The Restriction on the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regs 2005(RoHS) come into effect on the 1st July 2006. You may or may not be affected. See http://www.netregs.gov.u...n/380525/477158/?lang=_e

The WEEE/RoHS directives are due to be transposed into UK legislation in July/Aug this year and apparently there will be a "window" of 3-4 months before they are then enforced. So I suppose the answer you are looking for is Nov-Dec 2006, unless you can get an exemption.

My information is that whilst RoHS requires lead content to be reduced, there are exceptions e.g - apparently lead-free soldering is not as reliable on electronic circuits and so there will be an exemption for circuit boards in PC "Servers", whereas "ordinary" PC's must be made with lead-free stuff. In practice there's often no difference between two PC's - it's just what they're used for - so I guess PC manufacturers would prefer to class all PC's as "server-capable". RoHS will take years to come into effect - there are so many arguments about it that enforcing it (if attempted) woudl be a minefield.
