Dear all,
I’m a new safety manager of a retail company (completely new to retail) and have a few things I would like advice on:
Emergency Lighting
We currently undertake a full test (via a contractor) of our emergency lighting every 6 months. Some local fire authorities have asked that we test it every month, which will involve store managers undertaking the test. To my knowledge, whilst this would be good practice, it is not a legal requirement. I am concerned because the lighting we have in store does not allow (at the moment) a visual check to determine if the emergency lighting is working and I do not want store managers going into electrical cupboards to perform this test. Any suggestions?
Incident Reporting
I want to set up a telephone based incident reporting system. Has anyone else done this? If so:
• How do you manage the data collected by a manager to enable them to phone the incident through post incident (keeping in line with data protection)? • What system did you employ to ensure lost time incident where covered? • How readily retrievable where the records for inspecting officers and where they happy with the system?
Working at height in clothing shops (use of body forms, access to shelving)
Being new into retail, I’ve noted that a variety of ladders used are inadequate and do not provide for a safe system of work, particularly when moving 21kg full body forms into place at high levels. This is not helped by over stocked store rooms etc. Overstocking and racking management is something I’m working on. Nonetheless, I would like advice on access solutions within shop fronts and store rooms, which allow for safety working at height but are also lightweight and usable.
In addition, I have found a lot of defective ladders, is there a company which maintains ladders (e.g. replacing rubber fittings etc.)
Measurement of business loss
Does anyone have an electronic tool for working for providing an indication of a company’s direct/indirect losses.
Thanks in advance.

Dear Dave,
May I suggest that you contact the chair of the Retail and Distribution Specialist Group who I am sure would be pleased to help with your enquiry. Their details can be found on this website under "Specialist Groups" at the left of the page. I hope you are successful in your enquiry.
