Posted By steve adcock I recantly went for a interveiw and was introduced to the MD Who in turn introduced me the compitant person who was going to be my boss he had only done the managing safety course also when i produced my portfolio he looked as if he did not understand the units of NVQ4 and was embaressed to ask. So what chance have some of us who have worked hard for our qualifications got with potential employers what do not know what they want. Steve Adcock Grad IOSH

Posted By Helen Horton Having been made redundant in 2004 and then applying for jobs I can confirm that most employers have absolutely no idea of what H&S qualifications mean in terms of the work that an individual is competent to undertake. For example I had an interview for a job which included corporate governance, due dilligence and developing an implementing an H&S management system to meet OHSAS 18001. The specification they had asked for someone with the NEBOSH Certificate and the expectation that the individual would be able to work unsupervised! With a degree in H&S and specialist training in auditing and OHSAS 18001 plus several years experience of corporate governance and due dilligence I was told I was over qualified and too expensive as my "get of bed price" was £10,000 higher than the head of H&S's salary!!! With the best will in the world, someone with the NEBOSH cert couldn't possibly do the job as it was described.

I once worked for a company who had been in business for a couple of months and they needed an experienced contracts manager - me! I met the MD who was appointed by the owner of the company and he came across ok at first meeting. I never really spoke to him again til I started...then the sky started to fall around me! He was useless. He used to threaten staff for no apparant reason, belittle co-workers and he did not have a clue about regs or even basic tasks. For a laugh I used to submit incorrect method statements for his approval, watch him sign off on it and then turn round and say "by the way, there about 13 mistakes on that version!" I lasted 3 months before I realised that just being associated with the company would drag me down. It's a funny old life. Regards, Mark

Posted By Jos It really boils down to the fact that employers are people, and it is the person, or people, within the organisation that are clueless, probably because they were incorrectly selected by yet another ‘clueless’ person in the first place! When it comes to H&S, in my experience there is a wide range of different employers, some that do know what they are looking for, and others that don’t. I personally find that the most rewarding interviews are when you are interviewed by a ‘competent’ H&S professional, usually the future manager. This is the best chance you get to shine and prove you know the ropes.

Posted By Paul Hay You only have to look in the back of the SHP. Wanted CMIOSH,with relevent degree and 30 years experience - salary £18K or H&S Manager £45K, must have NEBOSH certificate. The worrying thing is, quite often these adverts are placed by 'specialist' H,S&E recruitment agencies!! Paul

Posted By Stuart Mallett My experience of this is when the person interviewing you is looking at you and clearly thinking " If I employ this bozo, I will be looking over my shoulder before long as they will have my job!"
