Posted By Helena Hi - I have to present to a sceptical line manager tomorrow on the value of safety training and encouraging staff to take responsibility in reporting hazards, there is a fear culture at present preventing staff from getting involved... does anyone know of any stats that can be used to support this point? Thanks very much

Posted By David Kimmins Helena I'm going to be philosophical in my responses, because I believe to be successful we have to integrate our desires into the activities of others, if the result is invisible then it’s a good result. Can you incorporate safety training seamlessly into operations and/or quality training? If the process is good then there are no accidents, if the process is bad then there are accidents. I really don't care if the word safety is ever mentioned as long as the workplace is safe! Safety and efficiency are synonymous. On the second point, why are we doing hazard spotting. Can you do something more positive and again, ‘integrated’. Let employees point out things that are right more than things that are wrong. Not just to do with safety but with quality & production. How can there be a fear culture saying, Helena picked up that box very well, she bent at the knees, kept her back straight etc.. you get the idea. If you catch them doing something wrong and scold them, guess what, they’ll continue to do it, but just make sure you’re not around when they do. If you catch an employee doing something right and thank them, guess what, they’ll make sure you keep seeing them doing it right, they'll even do it right when you're not watching. 'Thankyou' is such a powerful word. David

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Helena As well as Davids comments, I would suggest that you try to get the manager in question to allocate values to having a fully fit properly trained employee and the alternatives of short-term agency staff and the usual fill-in of stretching everyone else even thinner. If that person does the sums guided [not led, or told] by you, there's a chance that the beginning of an attitude change that leads to a wider cultural change will occur. Just remember - nothing except death and taxes happen overnight. Frank Hallett
