I think I'm getting a bit confused! Please could someone let me know if, as a company, we can act as our own planning supervisor and just appoint a principal contractor for some refurbishment works we are doing?
Many thanks,
K

Under Irish Legislation the Client can also act as Planning Supervisor (Project Supervisor Design Stage) if they are competent to take on the role. The Client has a responsibility under the 2005 Act to ensure they appoint 'Competent' contractors which in your case would involve you auditing yourself as Client auditing potential Planning Supervisors.
Not sure if the situation is the same under CDM.

As I understand it, the client can take on any, or all of the roles under CDM, provided they are competent to do so.

Which includes being "competent " in the works being undertaken.

Hi Kerri,
If this is a rare project for your company you should consider whether you understand the interface issues between your operations and the construction works, and the general standards which need to be applied to manage the various risks, as part of your assessment as to whether you could be a competent planning supervisor.
Helpful guidance on CDM for Clients published by CIRIA. Includes a checklist on what you should be doing, especially if you take on the role of planning supervisor.

Kerri, yes you can, it is the competency issue that is the most important one.
Do you feel competent in undertaking the planning supervisor role and could you justify that you were competent should something go amiss.
I carry out the planning supervisor role on a vast range of projects, drop me a line if you want a chat. (not touting for work, i have plenty, just offering help as per the ethos of this forum).

As stated by others, yes you can, but you must make sure that you ask yourself am I actually competent, and do I have the necessary resources to undertake the role.
The roleof the planning supervisor is about much more than just H&S, you also need to have an indepth knowledge of both the construction industry/construction processes and building/engineering design. If you have no experience of the role I would question whether or not you have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience etc.
Hope this helps
Dave
