Posted By John Mac Carthy Fellow colleagues I've recently completed an overview of a sites internal safety communications and found the requirement for a employee suggestion scheme. I'm open to suggestions/examples/pro's & con's and your views. Particularly interested in what to avoid and means of engaging the workforce that others have found successful, industry construction/M&E. Feel free to comment here or email me directly. Many thanks John JohnMacCarthy25@yahoo.com

Posted By Merv Newman I have met a number of these schemes. The best are those which provide a fast reply to the suggester. Like, "within 24 hours we are coming back to you to say if we are going to consider your suggestion or not" Most award a certain number of points for the original suggestion, which may be increased, but NEVER decreased, depending on the eventual value/savings resulting from the suggestion. Total reward is sometimes related to actual cost savings. Maybe 0.1 % ? Save the company a million pounds in the first year and you get (you work it out. It's friday dammit) Normally, suggestions are not limited to safety, but safety suggestions can sometimes be worth twice the points of an equivalent "production" suggestion. Some sites use monetary awards, gift or meal vouchers. (I like the last. Get two and you can take your wife or girlfriend. Get three and you can take them both) Others have a list of "gadgets" (can send you a copy by fax if you like) Examples are baseball caps, swiss army knives, first aid kits, all with the company logo. Anecdote : knew a man who told me he made the same suggestion every year. It was never implemented but he always got paid. Merv

Posted By Stuart Nagle We have implemented a company wide suggestion scheme anemd 'EUREKA'. This scheme is not purely for H&S but services any ideas any employees may have on how things can be improved. The scheme accepts all ideas and has a team of people who meet regularly to examine all the suggestions submitted and examine the ideas carefully for their merits or otherwise. Everyone gets a response on what is happening to their idea and if implemented and it results in cost savings for the company, the person who submitted the idea gets paid a percentage of the estimated cost savings over a given period. If cost savings increase/decrease or are gained continuously over a period of time the cheques keep coming.... The scheme has had a great response and several really good ideas have been taken up that have/or will lead to costs savings for the company and employees have been rewarded... for example, as a company employing a mobile workforce, often it very difficult to find rural locations and a lot of time was lost on map reading, going to the wrong or mistaken locations, customers getting upset etc etc... The idea was to provide sat nav systems for all company works vehicles. The suggestion was evaluated and a three month trial carried out with a number of vehicles. Savings were so good and the amount of work achieved so improved that the person who suggested the idea got over £1000 straight away and is liklely to get other cheques in proportion to savings made in an ongoing basis. This creates a real atmosphere of partnership and inspires all employees to look carefuly at whta they do and how they do it, not mearly in respect of finiancial gain, but lots of suggestions for improving safety measures (e.g. lone working) have also been received and evaluated... the scheme is going from strength to strength... Stuart
