Posted By Paul Griffiths 2671 Does anyone know or understand why IOSH value the NEBOSH General Certificate at such a low level. Afetr passing this exam, I was expecting more than to be offered the lowest level of membership at affiliate level. After working at my previous employers for two years I have moved to a better position, Whilst leaving my employement I was involved in the recruitment process. I had applicants who had NVQ level 4 qualifications (A higher level of IOSH membership) who couldnt answer basic health & safety questions. Thoughts Anyone ?

Posted By J Knight Hi Paul, Its to do with CPD isn't it? Nobody gets automatic Chartered membership any more unless they are on one of the transitional arrangemnets, and afetr five years CPD I though Cert allowed TechIOSH, John

Posted By Sean Fraser If H&S professionals actually want to be considered a professional field, then they need to prove their knoweldge base is above that of a 2 week course. Therefore, to become a full member, you need to complete at least a diploma. I have general engineering knowledge after years of working in engineering environments, and I have attended various courses that have had an engineering basis. In fact, I go to our local IMechE events more than I do IOSH ones (they are on the same dates and frankly I get more out of the former). I converse with engineers on an almost daily basis. But I could never claim to be an engineer unless or until I pass a degree on the subject. The analogy is not entirely like-for-like but the sentiment is the same.

Posted By Hazel Harvey Paul, The current IOSH byelaws require you to have held a health and safety role for at least 5 years in addition to having the NEBOSH Certificate awarded after December 2002. This involvement in health and safety can be prior to obtaining the certificate as well as afterwards. The most common profile of Technician Members is a bit of both. Although the NEBOSH Certificate was revised and brought up to meeting the level 3 standards, the IOSH Council in making its recommendations for the new byelaws took into consideration the important part that gaining skills and experience played in developing Techncian Members, in addition to the possession of a qualification. So the qualification itself is fine but you will need to be able to demonstrate more experience before you can be transferred from the Affiliate Member category.

Posted By Kev S Paul, If you now do an NVQ Level 4 you could up grade to GradIOSH on completion. Or you could practice in a safey role for 5 years as Hazal say's then become TechIOSH, but unfortunately theres no easy way up the tree, believe me I've walked around the base of it for long enough! As previously mentioned if a 2 week course was all it took to be a safety proffessional then everyone would be one (that might not be a bad thing actually). Keep working at it. Kevin
