Hi
I was just wondering if you could tell me who has to carry out Risk Assessments within an office environment. Does it have to be a H&S professional or can the HR Admin do it?
Thanks

Is the HR Admin capable or trained in doing the RA? If so, I dont see why not. Especially as I presume this RA will be checked and signed by a H+S advisor/safety rep etc. anyway
If not trained and there is no one who will be approving the RA who has had RA training then possible not

I don't believe anyone has recieved any H&S or RA training. Its only a small company with about 18 employees. The HR Admin has only been in her current role for 6 months. I think they feel they should do it as I am now 6 months pregnant and am starting to complain a little as we have had no basic RA, let alone a maternity one.

Did you notify the company in writing that you were pregnant when you first told them? Guidance suggests that the company does not have to do anything until they have received written notification. But I would say that any company that did not do an assessment for a pregnant woman, even if it was verbal, is not acting in a responsible manor.
I would suggest you look at the HSE web site for important information for both employers and employees who are pregnant.

I initially told them verbally, then in writing, then gave them my MAT B1. I am due to finish in 10 weeks, so I think they are leaving it a little late. I saw my GP last week as I am suffering with pains in my back and pins & needles and numbness in my feet and legs. I told them this when I returned form my appointment last week and they said they hope to do a basic RA next week.

Hi,
A written request for maternity leave will count for the purposes of the Management Regs as notification of pregnancy, as presumably will filling in any standard corporate paperwork on the same lines,

My written notification stated I was pregant, my due date, they I intended to return to my current role, that I wanted maternity pay and that I would forward my MAT B1 as soon as I got it - which I did.

It sounds like the company you work for has no H&S in place, the management must be responsible for your welfare and if they have no H&S in place they are breaching a number of regulations. Be up front with them and tell them that they have a responsibility and they must do something constructive as soon as possible, not only for your H&S but also of everyone who works there.
If they have to pay for someone to come in and complete one for them then they should do that. I don’t think they can wait until they send someone on a RA course.
Having done a number of risk assessments for pregnant employees I get the feeling that they are extra careful and cautious in the working environment because not only have they got themselves to look after they have got their unborn babies welfare to look after as well. I am sure you are doing everything to ensure no risk to yourself and your unborn, but the company has a responsibility and they are neglecting this responsibility.
If I can be of more help e-mail me direct

Faye,
You could always start the normal revolt by suggesting the relevant manager might wish to be involved in that RA process?!?

Sounds like a caring organisation !! We have a considerable number of staff in various stages of pregnancy and have a policy and assessment procedure form etc. It isn't rocket science and doesn't take log. If you e-mail me will send it through. One thing is that it does need to be checked by a competent person as there are different risks at different stages which need to be considered. There are also some "delightful" conditions which may arise (although I had to take the reference to piles of the form !!).
Regards
Bill
