Posted By IanD Hi I am looking for a thermal-imaging camera to survey bearings, motors, electric panels etc. I have done the usual net search etc, but I was wondering if as anyone has used this type of equipment that can recommend a supplier?

Posted By Malcolm Fryer Ian, Bob or others I would be very keen to hear how you would value the role of themal imaging as a method of assessing fixed electrical installations. Malcolm

Posted By Frank Hallett Malcolm, they work fine but you must have the correct one for the job! You should all be aware that there are a range of TIC types available and that they fall into 2 basic categories. Some will provide a picture [even in colour now] - very useful for a lot of tasks [no, it won't see through clothes as such; yes I did try - shudder & squirm!]. The other type is essentially a visual display of heat variations of a particular area that you point it at - also very useful for some tasks but not the same as the picture version. Both have value and the defined functions of the TIC should be confirmed before actually acquiring one. I used them a lot as a Fire Survival Instructor and was even involved in their initial development at EEV/Marconi. Frank Hallett

Posted By John Murgatroyd There is a version that does see through clothes Frank................. All you do is insert a filter in front of the imaging device....something like a Wratten 87C filter (Kodak)...and it only lets infrared radiation through....no visual light at all...and it depends on the clothing...and the dyes used in their manufacture......cheap, flimsy and white clothes let the IR through and it is reflected off the body underneath (just thought I'd mention it !)

Posted By Frank Hallett John, the very thought sends quivers all up & down my back! However, I did say that the TIC doesn't "as such" see through clothing so thank you for confirming that. Frank Hallett
