Posted By stephencarey We are looking to buy a sound level meter and some accompanying equipment, but as usual we have a limited budget approx £1500. As it is a school we also have small works maintenance issues and some much larger projects around. We not only need to asssess construction works but also other parts of the school areas including the music departments, which include recording studios and what is called a rock room!!!. There is also a requirement to assess the sound or lack of it outside critical rooms such as the headmasters office for privacy. Has anyone out there have any advice to offer on the type of instrument /s required and where to obtain any training if required to use and understand them. The area i am in is the South. Thanks Steve

Posted By Robert S Woods The headmaster’s door is a bit of a non-starter. The machine will measure the decibel level but humans have the ability to fill in the bits they can't hear hence Chinese whispers. I did a course at Castle in Scarborough, which was very good, but there are plenty of courses about. I've got a Casella machine but if I had to make the decision again I would get a Cirrus meter. I understand there after sales service is excellent. Have a look at the Cirrus website for info on choosing a meter. You'll get a basic meter for your money but not the training as well. Bob
