Just wondering out of interest if anyone else has had an email from a company selling their H+S / ergonomic related wares.

Maybe it is just me, and if so I will actually view their website, but if this has been sent to everyone who has the decency to put their actual email address viewable for other people to contact them about private or sensitive matters or help which they feel they cannot publicaly display on the forum then I will name and shame them.

So not to brand incorrectly any company potentially being helpful to me the website address starts with a p and ends in an l www.p************l.com

Please let me know

Yes have had the same but most of the junk mail I get comes from agencies, who trawl the forum, one was actually very open about this they are H***M*******, this lot actually mnanged to crash my inbox with mailing from everyone of thier UK offices on the same day, apparently it was suppossed to be regional but they goofed. Had to go the legal route to get of the mailing list.

Personally wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I get spammed again and it affects legitimate e-mail.

I admit I have emailed people on this forum if I think I could help them including those who are looking for jobs and can understand agencies doing the same, if people are "looking" for jobs. But just trawling this site to mass mail to everyone/anyone what ever you like maybe against the site rules?

Descarte,

Don't think that your emailer has emailed me.

Get lots of enquiries from recruitment consultants but other than that not a lot of evidence of suppliers crawling this site.

Regards, Peter

Yep, I've been sent IOSH Junk Mail.

Nice to know that IOSH kept my data private, respected my e-mail address, complied with data protection requirements.

I think an explanation is owed! After all its not the Member service that my subscriptions paid for.

Yes agreed, I have received such IOSH junk mail also, as it has been said above I did not know my subscriptions paid to have my mail box filled with unsolicited rubbish. And again as above it is nice to know my email is open for all and sundry to exploit. IOSH what are you going to do about it?

I don't think I have identified any iosh related junk-mail. Just the usual offering enourmous growth in stocks and shares and so on. Who needs it ?

Maybe I'm missing something here but if you allow your e mail address to be shown on the forum, why blame IOSH for giving it out?

I don't think you can blame IOSH at all. After all there is an option that the member has to decide upon in order for their information to made available, so in my opinion, that is a chance you take.

I certainly agree with that, I was just wondering if this was common and if so, could perhaps name and shame these companies peddling their safety wares on the good people of this forum who as I said make available their email address for people to contact them and H+S matter which they either do not feel confident enough to post about on the board or they are matters of a personal or confidential nature

Totally agree with Ron's sentiments- I used to display my email address on this forum, however, the amount of spam that I received was becoming frustrating to say the least.

Since removing it, I have received hardly anything.

Try running a google on your own name and check how many times it comes up from IOSH Forums alone, a spammers paradise!

All I've had are the really unimagininative "spams" for Viagra! And they don't even know me.

No recruitment agencies, no sales of PPE or other H&S tat - I suppose that'll all change now.

This topic has been visited a couple of times before on this Forum and the best suggestions were:-
Don't leave your email accessible, but if you feel you must then sort out the resulting spam yourself; and even better
IOSH should provide a facility where automatic harvesting of emails is made impossible by the standard means of requiring the sender to physically type in the part of the address that is removed but made available seperately.

Over to you IOSH web-wizards!!!

Good morning,

I’ll split my response into two parts as the thread discusses two different sources of emails.

1. About IOSH mailings

Emails to IOSH members about events etc. are sent from IOSH departments and branches, the SHP and from IOSH conference organisers using our membership database, not the list of forum registrations.

Each email should also include a box or email contact to enable you to opt out. If this is not the case or if you’ve unsubscribed and found the emails are still being sent, please contact me with the details (and attach the offending email), so the source can be identified and we can fix the problem.

2. About spam mail from the Internet

One of the forum’s attractions is that it’s fully in the public domain, the down side of this is that, like everything on the Internet, it’s also accessible to those who want to send spam. We do forewarn you about this in the terms of use for the site (accessed via the acceptable use guidelines link in the right navigation or the link at the foot of every page on the site).

Terms of use

19 Discussion forum and email addresses

Forum users have the option to reveal or hide their email address from public view, but not from moderators, by altering their preferences in their own account, called ‘My details’. Please be aware that the nature of the Internet means that by revealing your address you may be opening yourself up to a lot of email. We recommend that you consider setting up an email account specifically for Internet use if you wish to reveal your email address.

Frank’s suggestion works in one sense but then leads to user error and a different kind of irritation so I’m not in favour. However, we do keep this under review and I’ll discuss the options with the moderators.

All I ever got was offers of second hand heavy earth-moving equipment from Vietnam; I maen, what would I do with that? And have you seen airmail rates for a JCB?

That's why my addy is hidden; though an alternative would be to show a second e-mail address, such as a YAHOO one which a) has good spam filters and b) can be opened at leaisure, unlike my work Outlook which shouts every time somebody offers it a Caterpillar,
