Admitadly, I over looked this aspect with respect to the implementation of the regs. But we have a few employees who require the use of hearing aids who now work in a mandatory hearing protection area.

After the usual comments of 'why dont they just turn the volume down?' I need to look at a way of addressing the issue.

Our PPE suppliers have shown us an ear muff designed for the hearing impaired which actually replaces the hearing aid in the work placed and raises the sound levels to the appropriate level.

Other than moving the operative to a different area, has anyone else got any suggestions?

You could try the manufacturers of made-to-measure earplugs that can be fitted with a range of different filters depending on requirements, cost £50-£100 but they last approx 5 years I'm told. I'm currently looking at these for our musicians particularly percussion and brass. Following websites might help.

Emtek Noisebreakers - I have recommended these on another thread - roughly £65 per pair with a 6 to 7 year lifespan depending on the rate of personal ear growth.

I have priced this cost against the provision of throw away types in certain work areas, and these proved to be cost effective over a five year life cycle with any extra being a bonus.

They have a scientific as well as a medical team to advise on particular applications so could be what you are looking for?

One of my sites has an engineer with a hearing impairment and as a result he was having difficulties in protecting his hearing and at the same time being able to hear , conversation, possible warnings etc whilst wearing hearing protection. We solved this issue by providing him with a specific pair of earmuffs manufactured by Peltor and sourced through ARCO.

Sorry but I can't rememder the name of this type of earmuff but contact ARCO who will be able to help. From memory they were about £100 but do the job well!

I am not connected with Peltor or ARCO just a customer of theirs!
