Posted By Marcus Corcoran Hi There Hope someone can give me some advice. As Dept Safety Rep, an employee asked me to purchase some lens cleaning solution and tissues for their spectacles (not safety spectacles). The person in question spends most of his day at a VDU and explained that clean lenses contributed to a better VDU working environment. I have now purchased the cleaning materials and made them available to all, but my Manager has asked whether we are obliged to provide this feature under the VDU Regs or whether we can advise that employees supply their own. Your opinions on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Marcus, I have often found a dihydrogen monoxide based cleaner and shirt tail more than suitable for my spectacle cleaning needs. I would therefore like to suggest you have been 'done'.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Just to clarify, I can't find anything under Reg 5 & the associated guidance. The only thing that might apply is Reg 7.1 of the PPE Regs, but as far as I know 'corrective appliances' are not PPE.

Posted By renown Marcus There is no obligation under the DSE Regs 1992 (as amended) 2002 for the employer to provide spectacle cleaner for employees.

Posted By jackw. Hi, not sure if this will help. I went to my optrician to purchase some lense cleaner..they told me to save my money and make up a weak solution of washing up liquid and warm not hot) water as this would do the job just as well. Cheers.

Posted By Salus Hello Marcus, I would ask the individual why they do not use the cleaner they have been using since wearing spectacles. They will next be complaining that their shoes have got dirty at work and can the company provide polish.

Posted By Fred Pratley There is no obligation to supply specialist cleaning fluids or tissues. As posted, soap and water does the job perfectly well. And if you get complaints, tell them you will get them if they pay for them. (PS ordinary tissue eventually scratches - cloth does not)
