Posted By S Deans Hi,
Does anyone have a safe system of work for carrying out work at height (roofs) or should we just be using the hierarchy set out in the WAH Regulations?

Posted By John Lewis There is a stack of stuff available on the HSE website which you can download. Indg 284 Working on Roofs, Indg 402 Safe ise of ladders and step ladders, Indg 405 Top tips for ladder and step ladder use plus the HSE Inspector training stuff. I have found the Green and Red books from the Advisory Committee for Roofwork to be invaluable, again they can be downloaded.
All of the above will give you a good grounding in work at height.
Best Regards John

Posted By John McFeely Try getting your hands on HSG 33 Health and Safety in Roof Work, although it was first printed in 1998 it is still a great source of information. Go to HSE Books and ask for ISBN 0 7176 1425 5. I will also email you with a couple of other documents that I have. Hope it is of some use.

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Always best to look at any specifics where you are. Yes, the HSE WAH information is very helpful, but circumstances change for individual situations' Is it MEWP access, internal to outside, does it have a 'man safe' system, are you relying on PPE, does it have a barrier, is it wet, dry, cold, day, night, flat, inclined so on and so on, if it is a contracter that requires access look carefully at his method statements, RA's, JSA, etc, between you all I suspect you can come up with some first-rate safe systems of work for accessing the roof.
I have lots of guidance notes that may be useful, but are generic so may not be suitable for your situation. Let me know if I can be of help.

Posted By David M. Shearer As well as the advise given you should consider purchasing a copy of G700 from the CITB, this document covers all aspects of construction activities. The HSE now uses this as a reference compliance document when visiting sites.
