What is the correct requirement for storing LPG gas cylinders? I have found the following from the HSE but it does not mention that the cylinders must be caged (which I understood to be a requirement):
1. Keep all cylinders in a safe, well-ventilated place, preferably in the open air, and away from occupied buildings, boundaries and sources of ignition and of heat.
2. Make sure the cylinders are properly secured and are kept upright.
I understand the LPGA have a publication called Storage of full and empty LPG cylinders and cartridges, available to buy, but I only have a couple on site and just want clarification on storage requirements ie do they need to be caged? IF so is there a standard of cage required?
Many thanks for your replies in advance

As far as I know there is no requirement for caged cylinders only sufficient seperation distances. The document you need which I dont have to hand is:
CoP 7: Storage of full and empty LPG cylinders and cartridges

The requirement for a cage or fence depends on the security arrangements on your site. The BCGA document "Guidance for the storage of gas cylinders in the workplace" section 5.8 Security, states the following:-
"Access to the storage area should be restricted to authorised personnel only.
Consideration should be given to site security, to prevent the unauthorised access to or tampering with cylinders. ....... Security for small quantities of cylinders may be achieved by the use of a suitably ventilated, lockable cabinet or wire mesh enclosure."
So it largely depends on your circumstances. Strictly speaking you should perform a risk assessment in accordance with the DSEA Regulations.
However, I'm sure that there are fire officers and others out there who will tell you that it's best practice to have the cylinders caged regardless.
Hope this helps.
