Posted By Graham Kearsley Hi all, We have a turnover of FLT contract drivers, which means that there are regular requests for FLT Training and obviously medicals to boot!!! Recently we have had a few failures on the medicals due to eyesight. I wouldn't dare question our Occupational Health Nurse, or attempt to bypass the data protection angle, but I am within my rights to question the standard set. We are using the DVLA Class 2 standard (see web link http://www.dvla.gov.uk/at_a_glance/ch6_visual.htm), as a preferred option to other guidance. However, is it right to disqualify or prevent a potential FLT driver from driving if their vision does not match Class 2? Is this common practice in other organisations? Are there any Occ. Health Bods who can verify what should be done with monocular vision? Any advice on FLT standards for the visually impaired would be much appreciated, Regards Graham

Posted By Philip Roberts Graham, I had a very similar problem with a potential candidate for a storekeeper who was the best man for the job at interview but had monocular vision.Part of the job was driving a FLT. I looked at all the relevent guidance and concluded that we would test the candidates ability to compensate for his visual disability and risk assess the outcome of allowing him to drive an FLT. We employed him on the basis of that test and he has turned out to be the best FLT driver on site because he realises he has to be more careful than other drivers and makes sure he looks all round and drives slower.
