A relative, who recently had a UK coach holiday, asked me the following: When a coach driver is driving their vehicle, is it safe for them to carry out sight seeing commentary while the vehicle is moving? She asked this as several times the driver had to move the microphone mouth piece and seemed to loose concentration on driving. Is this acceptable? If using a mobile phone is not ok then, is using a microphone for commentary deemed as ok? What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Bill

Hi,
I would suggest that using a microphone is no different to speaking to someone else or using a hands free mobile phone which is as far as in remember legal.

Bill,
I'd want my coach driver to be able to shift a microphone and continue to drive the vehicle safely.
There are many devices a driver (coach or car) must attend to or use and while driving. I'd be worried if the driver could not manage the microphone and the vehicle.
With commentary, the key difference to a phone/radio conversatoin is that the driver is the only one talking. He/she should be able to deliver the commentary without losing concentraion on the driving.
I'd rather a chatty driver than a sleepy one.
John.
