Posted By Dave Faragher Hi All We have recently transferred our diesel storage from an underground tank to an above ground tank,in order to comply with legislation the tank does have an integral bund. My query is risk assessment, information, instruction and training, adequate signage, means of first aid firefighting, environmental issues, means of dealing with spillage, lighting etc. Have i missed anything.Comments/advice would be greatly appreciate Thank you Dave Faragher

Posted By Rob Yuill For signage we replicated the "HazChem" board from the delivery tanker, so to maintain continuity to prevent contamination due to the wrong fuel, the emergency number can be an appropriate on-site number; a near-by phone is useful. Don't forget tank capacity and a means of determining the current volume, useful during delivery to prevent overfilling, and make sure the filling point is within the bunded area. I presume deliveries will be supervised? Spill kit? Rob

Posted By Tracey Kelly Dave, Here's a useful regulation from Ireland, with info on spills etc. http://www.hsa.ie/files/...043716certexempRPPSI.pdf The Institute of Petroleum have good guidance on diesel fuel storage. What's the capacity of your tank? Is it a petrol station, or for your own on-site vehicles? Are you close to houses, a river, drain etc.? Is the tank protected from impact from vehicles? Tracey

Posted By Descarte Im pretty sure if your storage tank is built double bunded as such, this still requires bunding unfortunately

Posted By Rob Yuill Primary containment - tank containing the fluid. Secondary containment - seperate container designed to prevent contamination or damage to the environment in the event of a failure of the primary containment. If the tank is double skinned that does not count as a bund, in that situation the tank is still only classed as having primary containment. A bund has to contain at least 110% of the content of the tank, not be physically close to or rely on the tank for structual support. The bund not only prevents spillage due to failure of the containment but protects the contents from fire and collision. It may be possible to argue after completing a risk assessment, that the location and other protective measures (armco barriers for instance) installed may be sufficiaent to mitigate the continuing use of a double skinned tank. BUT the EA would have the final word! CIRIA Reports 163 (Construction of bunds for oil storage tanks) and 535 (Above-ground proprietary prefabricated oil storage tank systems) give more information. Hope that helps. Rob

Posted By D Bruce have a look at www.fuelproof.co.uk They have quite a lot to say about the difference between double walled and tank systems which incorporate the dispensing equipment as well. The latter is said to meet all requirements.

Posted By Alexander Falconer Have a look at HSG 146 "Dispensing Petrol" This has lots of useful guidance, whilst applied to petrol, there is no reason why this could be utilised as best practice for Diesel! Also one key issue is to look at the environmental impacts resulting from the use, storage and dispensing of such fuels. Alex
