the quality/standards of operating forklifts in our warehouse have fallen dramatically over the years and i feel its time to start addressing this before someone is hurt, does anyone have a system in place to help combat this, my idea is a yellow and red card system ie. if you have an accident/drop a pallet you get a yellow card if you do it again its a red and you are taken off forklifts for a period of time and refreshed/retested.would this be possible with regards to contracts.any other ideas welcome.

Assuming you have the data to substantiate your view, a good way to start would be to hold a team meeting for all drivers and ask them what they think the issues involved really are. You may well find that there is a structural or layout issue than everyone knows about but has not so far been prepared to raise. The easy option is to do training of course, but if you don't do some research you run the risk of not getting to the bottom of the problem first.

You could consider an endorsement system where an operator incurring more than 12 points in a six month period would be suspended for operating. This would enable you to prioritise particular practices which are more serious than others e.g. damage to fixtures and fittings could carry 4 points where failing to sound horn leaving a building could carry 1 or 2 points.
With any such system though you will need to go through the appropriate consultation process and the issue of points need to be carried out formally by HR in the same way as any other disciplinary and must be recorded. Most important though, the individual will need to accept these points.
