I know there are a few IOSH mediators out there that review postings on these pages.
Could someone look at establishing a system whereby a thread that has genuine comments / answers / best practices or thoughts is reviewed / scrubbed clean (delete trivia comments / responses) and then posted in a "new" location for easy retrieval by those passing through these pages.
This may be a part time job for someone, or perhaps regular patrons of the page who recognise a good thread can suggest to an IOSH mediator when the thread can be added to the best practice page. By adding
Alternatively, would it also be possible for all readers to have the ability to rank / score a thread as to how useful it is / could be to others. I’ve seen other sites that have a 5 star ranking system – with the number of hits / number of responses (to ranking) & average score displayed.
This could help newer members find useful sites / common problems quicker & reduce the number of repeat threads appearing on the system.

I disagree. Well I would wouldn't I ?
I very much like the atmosphere of this site. Serious professional advice mixed in with a bit of good humour and friendly relationships.
Now, isn't that a good job description for the H&S person ?
EE. You should consider this site to be a "Learning Experience" even with the lousy jokes.

If you want a site with lots of safety information on day to day topics with no opinion, quests, arguements or long winded explanations veering off in to off topic conversations www.hse.gov.uk is for you.
I think this site has a unique mix of professionalism, advice, questions and answers in a non-intimidating and friendly setting

I'm thinking of fish. Probably sole, en papillotte with a bit of butter, herbs (tarragon ?) and some white wine. A white bordeaux seems about right. Boiled new potatoes and a jullienne of red, yellow and green peppers. Steamed.
Actually EE, most of my comments, recipes and lousy jokes are deliberately designed to encourage and re-inforce H&S and the practitioners thereof.
H&S can be a difficult profession. (Beentheredonethat) We need to lighten up. OK. Having accidents is a miserable experience (BTDT) but preventing accidents is reallyreally positive and you can take lots and lots of pride in achieving.
My career, for at least the last 20 years has been spent in persuading people that H&S is a great thing to do. Have fun. Be nice. Crack a few jokes even.
And the recipes ? It's life style. H&S is the job, with it's stresses and with it's successes. When you go home it's family. Wife and kids and loved ones (not necessairly the same). Don't take the files home. Relax and enjoy. Cook a meal. (the above recipe will take 10 minutes to prepare and less than 10 minutes to cook. it's quicker than defrosting a beef burger. Honest)
While I was plant H&S my wife and I had an informal agreement : Stay as late as you need to, but don't bring it home. Worked for us.
It does bleed over. I reckon that my wife can now do a safety/bbs audit as well as wot I could. (first thing : feel and look at the hands)
So, when I mix advice, jokes and the odd recipe, please remember that I have an ulterior motive : make H&S a fun, good, positive thing to do. And also to show practitionners that, if they at least try to do it my way, they can have a good life. And even pay off the mortgage 10 years early.

Right. That's it for tonight. Papillottes prepared, veg jullienned. Cats fed. Wife back from choral practice (Wer nur den lieben Gott Lasst wallen, Mendelssohn. We've been working on it all day. Her german accent ain't that good but she has to get the soprano solo right) at 8pm.
Then it's "The great British Menu"
Life style. It's all about life style. Which is why we get paid such munificent salaries. Innit ?
Merv (signing off quite happily. TWO Aberlours tonight)

Guys,
Thanks for all the responses so far, much appreciated.
I’d like to point out that I am not advocating eliminating this discussion forum in its current guise (yes – occasionally, it is frustrating to waddle through the waffle that enters the thread, but among that chaff there are some pearls of wisdom). This “new” location / web-page would save the crème-de-la-crème of comments / suggestions / discussions.
There were two benefits to having a similar system to the one I originally proposed:
1. It just seems that a lot of the best stuff on this pages may get lost for ever and that a bank of great comments could be very beneficial to the inexperienced reader (I have over 15 years in the trade and am still learning daily)
2. It would allow the inexperienced reader “another” tool to quickly reference and obtain the best materials / comments from
Here is a second suggestion, can we have an on-line chat room (open to all or IOSH members), for those who crave immediate interaction?
Regards EE
PS Frank – the DUFF thread by Anon1234 has nothing to do with me.
