Hi all, can anyone recommend a general manual handling training DVD please? There are a few available between £80 to £400, but which one is best?

Having viewed several Manual Handling DVDs, my favourite is the one from John Burder Films http://www.johnburder.co.uk/manhan.php
This shows the correct Kinetic handling techniques, whereas so many others still show the old knees bent- back straight method. Often film makers get a weight lifter to show how to lift, and they do simply do not understand kinetec handling.
The John Burder film shows a variety of work situations, and can be used as the basis for a manual handling training session.

I once saw one which had children lifting a variety of different objects. It demonstrated that children are experts in correct kinetic lifting techiniques - really! I can't say whether it is a good video or not but it sticks in the mind and wasn't boring - that has to be good in my books. I think it was called Childsplay.

I remember "Childsplay" and it was poor in my opinion as the children do not grab the loads with any sense of lifting technique. The video DVD focussed solely on the bending of the knees and keeping the back straight, which is fine as part of the whole package of manual handling but is only a fraction of the whole.
Secondly the scenarios were set in some kind of real workshops with some poor H&S in the background...trailing wires, sparks flying etc as I recall, and therefore I would find it hard to commend this product to anyone.

Paul,
I was recently shown an updated version of the Child's Play video - shot in an nice and "safe" office environment.
Whilst I agree with Mark that there are other aspects of M/H to be covered, (i.e. walking the route / unbalanced loads) I think that it is an excellent method of getting the point across.
If only for the realisation that we all used to lift properly, it's just that we've learned to do it badly. Pennys dropping can be heard for miles.

I thought the child's play video was excellent for the purposes of correct lifting and will keep people (at the level I am thinking of) entertained and interested in what I am trying to show them.
Anyone know where I can get a copy?

Two versions of Childsplay (industrial/office) can be obtained from Safetycare at around £250. Also it's only 10 minutes. I use it at the end of MH awareness sessions and it generally lifts the whole session - easy innit?
Look also at Osteopaths for Industry's 'Training for Handlers' for basic technique, which is very, very cheap. I usually wind the tape past the 'sales' bit at the beginning and then it is only 5 or so minutes long.
