Posted By Drew Shaw Hi. I got some good opinions / guidance to the last topic I posted (re. excavations) so for this new query, I'm hoping for a perfect two from two. Basically, I've got a few inspections to do at high level (from 5m - 8m) in an MOD explosive storehouse. In the past, no problems, we simply hired in an electric MEWP (along with an IPAF trained operator) and had the building emptied of explosives. However, MOD have tightened up on the rules for working in such buildings and as such, even if empty the equipment still must be to a suitable standard "electrically", the standard being an INGRESS PROTECTION number of IP44 or higher. Has anyone ever managed to source an MEWP which is certified with an "IP number", if so where ? Alternatively, I may look at the manual pedal lift type if I can get one that will reach, does anyone have any info. on these also ? Thanks in advance. Drew

Posted By David Tilsley-Curtis Drew The IP rating system is generally used to indicate a level of protection against solids and liquid ingress into electrical components and enclosures. As a result you will not find a MEWP with a specific IP rating, you may find one suitable for specialist environments such as spray booths or other area with dangerous vapours etc.. These may well have the electrical components at a high enough IP rating as a consequence of the zoning issues covered. The major area you will struggle is the battery enclosure, it may be explosion protected equipment and still let in solids greater than 1mm as required by your IP44 rating. If this is still an issue, you could try raising the ‘zoning’ issue with the MOD at see if they would accept this in place of an IP rating only. If however you do need to look at something like the Pedalift, we are one of the manufacturers distributors and can forward what ever info you require. David

Posted By Paul Yu There is a relevant standard about MWEP - EN280 (Mobile elevating work platforms - design calculations - stability criteria - construction - safety - examinations and tests) Also, the standard EN60529 which is about the IP rating (Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code)). I am a machinery safety engineer (CE marking), if you want any help! please contact me, I would like to discuss with you.

Posted By Chris Knagg I have just spent a day this week with Facelift, (www.facelift.co.uk) they specialise in the unusual and specialist access platforms. They reckon that they have the machines for the jobs that other access platform providers can't touch. Ewan Smith, esmith@facelift.co.uk is their training specialist, very knowledgeable about their fleet. I am sure he will be happy to discuss.
