Posted By Heather Collins Two methods: 1. Lag the pipes and trace heat them to keep the water from freezing. 2. Replace the wet system with a dry system for the outside pipework only. Filled with a compressed gas so that when the head operates there is still a physical pressure change that then opens a valve and lets the water in. Such a system can be filled with water during the spring/summer/autumn, and then gets converetd back to dry in time for winter. We opt for the first of these methods for our external sprinklers.

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney As you know, most common types of sprinkler system have the network of pipe work full of water at all times. If there is a possibility of exterior pipes becoming frozen then there are fail safes that can easily be designed into the system. Generally they have air under pressure in the pipes which keeps the water back until a sprinkler head operates, thus eliminating the possibility of a sprinkler system not working efficiently due to potential frozen water.
