I work with saipem contracting Nigeria. We are looking forward to seeing that we ahve safe place of work and try as much as possible to build up the safety and health of our workplace.
Currently, manegement has planned to introduced ladders tags as a way to chechmate any discripances of ladders in the worsites.
My question is this:Is their a regulation allowing this.I will appreciate every piece of note sent to me.

i think you may be thinking of scaftags, most of the time when i see a ladder with a tag on it, it is a scaftag, which is used to show a scaffold has been inspected and is fit for use. So it would be a good idea looking at the regs that cover scaffolding, which would be construction.

I regret, but you should look at Nigerian regulations to see if such tags are a requirement.

If my memory is still good, there may not be such a requirement but many european or american companies working in Nigeria work to their own national legislations.

Even if there is no such legal requirement, the introduction of dated inspection tags documenting inspection by a competent person is always a very good practice. But the tag, by itself, is useless. What you will need is a system that ensures that scaffolding, ladders etc are inspected. Then the tag gives visible evidence to the user that the equipment has been inspected and should be safe to use. ("should be" not "will be")

Check out the new safety platform on safeplatforms.com. It is a super lightweight portable platform that meets OSHA and ANSI standards. It won a national award at the National Hardware Show and was a featured product at the Ohio Safety Show. It is light enough to pick up with one hand and will hold 2000 lbs. This new SafeTec platform is great for safety managers, because of its non-tip non-slip design. Check it out at safeplatforms.com.

Stanley, Are you referring to ladder
numbering for identification and auditing
purposes. Such numbering in addition to proper storage
and maintenance forms part of your safety
mangement system and will be associted with
all relevant paperwork to confirm visual
inspections and checks.

5.0 Quality Specifications
5.1 A nominated person shall inspect fixed ladders in the plant, once per year.
5.2 All ladders shall be numbered and the numbers shall be recorded in a register listing the condition of the ladder and any comments.
5.3 Portable ladders shall be clearly numbered.
5.4 Unsafe ladders shall be tagged and removed from service immediately.
5.5 When not in use, ladders, must be stored in clearly demarcated ladder racks.

Gareth

For information purposes, Scafftag also supply ladder tags, these are slightly smaller but similar to the scaffold tag system and are fitted directly to the ladder.
