Apologies if this has been covered before but I am looking for data regarding recommended limits for safe lifting and carrying of objects at the side of the body by one hand (similar in concept to a non wheeled suitcase). The carrying would also include stairs etc.
The application is likely to involve members of the public, so training in correct lifting methods is not possible.
Can anyone suggest a source of information?
Thanks
Simon

Since this is involving members of the public? I would be hesitant to give a specific limit without knowing some if not all of the following information:
Age, physical condition, past back problems, heart issues, distance carried, handles?, cotents (hazardous?), stability of load, availability of rest, temperature, gradiant, wet/dry?, objects / hazrdas?
In essence you need to do a manaual handling assessment of the task, but first I would ask myself, is this task required? Can it be done by another meads, FLT, sack barrow etc....

Thanks Descartes
Unfortunately this is a product that could be purchased by anyone of any age etc. It will have a clearly identifiable sturdy carrying handle but the handle will be at least 200mm from the side of the body due to the size of the product.
I realise that my question is almost impossible to answer but I somehow have to try and identify any guidelines that may exist.

If you are selling this product to the public it would be unreasonable to do a risk assessment for everyone. However, if the product is heavy or awkward you need to inform each individual. This can be done by using a label. The label would give the weight etc. It is better not to advise the public on how to carry the product in detail. If you do and an injury happens you will have a claim on your hands.
