Posted By Mal Shiels Hi all, i am involved with a local safety group in Newcastle (Newcastle Construction Safety Group) and we are currently organising our annual seminar. This year the subject area is sustainable construction and health and safety. I am responsible for organising one of the sessions. I am looking for a charismatic speaker who can do a 45 min slot on the links between sustainable construction and health safety and welfare. I have my own thoughts and ideas but as part of the committee i feel it would be best to have an external speaker. Has anyone heard a good speaker in this subject area before and can point me in the direction of the speaker. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Regards

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Mal From some years' experience of working in construction, I would be extremely wary of an invitation as a 'charismatic' speaker. Those I've known who were most effective avoided such a noose around their necks. If you specify what results do you want your speaker to achieve, and the preferred style of his or her behaviour, you are more likely to get a satisfactory shortlist. Without the Apocalypse.

Posted By Mal Shiels In response to Keirans comments, here is a short brief of what we are looking for: @ there will be a speaker who will set the scene on what is sustainable construction. @ then the speaker i am looking for will specifically make links between sustainable construction and health and safety issues, eg: energy efficiency - solar panels - working at height - future maintenance. @ we need the speaker to press home the message that sustainable construction does not introduce new hazards, indeed it can help, eg: low energy light bulbs - less maintenance. @ it is a 40 / 45 min slot for the speaker and we would want them to concentrate on the four main areas within sustainable construction, energy efficiency, water, waste, and respect for people. Hope this helps. Thanks for the prompt Keiran Regards

Posted By Robert K Lewis Mal I still think there is a blurring of meanings here. Sustainable construction is about the environmental issues assessment commencing as early as the planning stage with a view to reducing the impact of the structure, and to an extent the selection of materials. The concerns about new hazards for H&S that might be created have been in my view overrated but I would like to know how your current speaker frames the issues. The H&S issues, do not appear for me to be novel but I do accept that there are bits stuck on to give an outward appearance of env. friendliness but which increase the H&S risks. I am thinking of the Tesco example here where mini-wind generators powered the tills etc in the store. They were located right out on the edge of the front canopy with no means of securing personal safety from falls. Sustainable change has been and continues to be a real H&S issue. This is a different narrative though! Bob
