Time and a place
Isn’t it annoying when you are trying to discuss H&S issues with employees only to find that they have just had a shouting match with a supervisor over pay or bonus?
A client’s employee just said to me “there’s a time and a place for H&S”
Wouldn’t it be nice to be made aware of such issues and discussions? Or is this just part of the job?

I wonder, from your presentation of the facts, to what extent you may have been facing a good opportunity to assess the risks of neglecting the sources of stress presented to you.
'The time and the place' may have been just where you were, but 'H & S', like other areas of working life, doesn't come in boxes neatly labelled.
If it's not too late, provide feedback to the supervisor on the evidence presented by employees about unhealthy stress - and offer to training him/her and them to manage their work-related stresses more cost-effectively.

Thanks for the response Kieran, I did provide feedback straight away, and I feel I did the right thing by leaving the guys to calm down.
Its easy for a supervisor "who has had" stress training to cause stress on others simply by the nature of discussion, money and hours worked are more important to an employee than details of a PUWER assessment. One day maybe we shall record each stress moment!
Is it worthy of the thought!

On the basis of what you now write, I wonder to what extent the critical issue lies in your apparent misinterpretation of the reliability and validity of the 'cause' of employee stress.
What methods did you use to evaluate the reliability and validity of data about the supervisor as 'cause' of stress? How well did you check out your methods with the supervisor him/her-self?
