Posted By Michelle Wilson Does anyone have any good links to web sites - or personal experience they are willing to share - about unloading (destuffing) shipping containers in a non-dockside environment. I'm trying to develop a Safe System of Work and would appreciate any assistance - the risk assesment has highlighted falls fom height & manual handling, but I'm looking for good practical controls.

Posted By Jasonjg Depending on contents, I used to work in the bulk liquid transfer sector where liquids were pumped into large bags within the container. My role was the installation and discharging of such liquids. Bulkheads were used to strengthen the doors and a side effect was the fact that the doors usually flew open with some considerable force. This happened rarely and it was only complacency that caused operators including myself to be struck with some force if not cautious in this area. Other hazards included, sharp sides caused by denting, nails etc. Most sites had stands provided but when abroad, working at height was a problem. Falls from badly stacked items when opening doors also a problem as well a FLT hazards when re-stacking onto pallets just outside premises under time pressures. Creepy crawlies depending on origin. Wind blowing doors back onto operators due to no ties being available that usually secure the doors via the hooks.

Posted By Michelle Wilson Contents are very large noticeboards - goods in container ar largely palletised, with some loose stacked items. Good point about the doors though - thanks for that.
