Posted By Malcolm Hogarth Hello all. Another basic question I'm afraid. Can anybody tell me what the technical name is of the 'gate'on a lift truck that is between the forks -tines and the mast and that the tines are attached to? I am nowhere near a lift truck at the moment and I have not got a copy of HS(G)6 to refer to. It is obvously (?) a guard of some kind (or is it?)I had it in mind that is is a chain guard but I am sure that is not right. Another question - is there a simple answer to what is defined as 'special waste' Many thanks, Malcolm

Posted By peter gotch Hi Malcolm Its official title is Load Backrest Extension... from HSG6 A load back-rest extension should be fitted if the lift truck is used to move objects liable to fall on the operator. The load back-rest extension should be high enough to prevent the load rolling over the top of it. Regards, Peter

Posted By Martin Monaghan In reply to your second question: Special Waste has been superseded by Hazardous Waste. The definition in the Hazardous Waste Regs is: "6. Subject to regulation 11, a waste is a hazardous waste if it is for the time being— (a) featured in the List of Wastes as a hazardous waste; or (b) any other waste which (being a waste considered to display one or more of the properties listed in Annex III) is a hazardous waste pursuant to regulations 8 or 9; and (c) a specific waste which, though of a type indicated in the List of Wastes as non-hazardous,is determined pursuant to regulation 10 to be a hazardous waste" i.e. there isn't a simple definition! There is lots of guidance on the Environment Agency and Defra Websites. If you have a particular waste in mind I might be able to point you in the right direction. Martin.
