I have a first aid dilemma. I am fully staffed for first aiders and responders in the daytime but I have hit a brick wall for the few staff who work evening and weekends.
Are First responders considered suitable frist aid cover for this or do I have to get an evening or weekend worker trained up as a first aider?

Depends what your few staff are doing, how many there are and what risks they could face. If you have ready access to emergency services and they are not undertaking any high risk or specialist activity for which specific first aid knowledge might be required, then your cover could be adequate as your first responders can be appointed persons under the regs.
See the HSE's info on this at http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/firstaid.htm

Don't forget to think about the training that your/the first responders have had.
I'm a first repsonder trainer, you would be surprised at some of the skills that are not covered in their training as they would only attend 999 calls.
Personal recommendation - first aid is a life skill, encourage as many people within your workplace to be first aiders.
have you looked at the reasons why they do not want to be trained?
