Hi Roger

Having recently completed the course, the two best things you can do before going are........

1 Read HSE L108 - Controlling Noise at Work thoroughly and;
2 Learn how to do logarithmic calcs on a calculator, if you dont already know how......

Wish someone had told me before I went!

Cheers
Tony

Roger,

I have hard copy information on carrying out noise calculations, e-mail me a postal address and will post the info.

Roger like you I was nominated for the IOA workplace noise assessment course. My recommendation is brush up on basic logarithms, (hated maths at school). This was quite a shock but after 1st morning spent doing the calculations it became a lot easier.

Good luck

Its a good course and like the others have said there are elements on maths that may throw some people.

Where are you going to study it ??

Roger, I did the course in Bristol and the instructor Stan Simpson from UWE is excellent, I did not know what to expect or what I had let myself in for both Stan and his colleague were very supportive and were able to assist in getting you to understand what to do and how to do it.
A morning spent on Log and you will soon pick it up, the rest is easy even I managed to pass the written exam. The practicle work at the University of the West Of England built environment department was excellent.

Yes, the calculations are tricky if like me you would spend your maths lessons at school saying “Sir, what is the point. When will I ever have to do this when I leave school?”
Did this course at the EEF in Sheffield, learnt an awful lot. It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised how little I actually knew about noise and how to assess it before I went.
It is a course that you have to commit yourself to passing.
