Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi folks,
A recreational safety question if you please!
I have two talkative young children and peace and quiet is a rare commodity... However, I now have a trike (yipee) and think it may be a good idea to be able to listen for any "are we nearly there yet?" type questions - as opposed to "mum, I've just dropped....". Yikes - what have I let my self in for?.. Don't worry a full risk assessment has been undertaken, 5 point harnesses installed and kids briefed not to tell grandma, otherwise serious emergency evacuation procedures will be needed!
Back to the point in question.
Can anyone recommnend a good radio communciation system to go in our helmets, and can you get ones that do 3 way?
Thankyou
Linda

Posted By Philby' Linda,
are you getting to that age where the patchoili oil smelling leathers make a comeback...even if they're larger ones than the originals you once had....I'm speaking from a personal point of view/experience you understand...anyway, to answer your question
its like owt else lass, thee gets what thee pays for...there are quite a few on the market and, if you listen to friends, collegues, pub talk etc...different people like different brands and no one seems to agree...and yes you can get 3way, 4way and any other way...wired or radio.
the best people to ask are the older end at the bike shop, if they are anything like our local ones here, they show you the top and bottom end and recommend the middle ground....and they dont argue with you over a pint to the point of abject boredom.
Philby'
PS if its 'four wheels good, two wheels better'....isn't three wheels a compromise...? Next vehicle I get is a 12 wheeler with tracks!

Posted By Stupendous Man Linda,
I'm getting the impression that these are motorised trikes (i.e. a quad minus 1 wheel), rather than the traditional pedal tricycle.
Cost may be an issue here, but I would suggest that a good starting point would be some of the race and rally car accessory suppliers, such as Demon Tweeks (whom I have used on a few occasions). They sell a number of different systems including Peltor - who you may have come across if searching for ear-defenders.
All the best with your search.

All terrain vehicles of the 3 wheeled types.
If that is what we are talking about I would agree with Philby on two wheels being better than 3 or 4.
Why?
Well, have you ever seen a "tartan bruise" cos I have. Mate on a 3 wheeler drove up his own leg when his foot came off the rest. Lovely big chequered bruise from the chunky tyres all up his calf. I'll not go into the groin injury suffered cos people have just had breakfast.
I came off the scrambler badly about 5 times before the age of 14, leg burns and concussion were the worst injuries but I knew experienced bikers who couldn't stay on those bloomin 3 wheeled things for more than a lap.
Anyway taught me that I never wanted to ride a bike on the road cos I was too crap at it when there were fixed targets let alone moving ones

You could use a license free radio with vox, voice activated transmitter on it then you could have as many as you like. Should be cheaper than going for a helmet intercom system. Or get the kids to shout, obviously you would not be able to hear them and eventually they would give up due to a sore throat, also you would get less noise when you reach the destination!!!
2 wheels better than 3 or 4

Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi folks
I've just googled the demon site, I see what you mean about choice!
FYI
Its a virago that has been specially converted on account of having 2 wheels (SV650) which was never getting used (it made the garage look good). The kids will have helmets on, as I want to start them off on the right foot - even though it is not legally required.
I have just been around the block, had a nice little route mapped out to practice on until someone parked in my turning circle. How inconsiderate! After 10 mins I appeared to be a modern pied piper with a stream of kids following and then a burly biker pursued me to ask questions on the conversion.
Regards
Linda

Posted By steve e ashton Linda: try talking to some of your local m/c instructors: they usually use two way, but some are now using multi-way helmet systems to communicate with their goslings.
As for trikes - my only experience (when I was young and foolish) was a 1600 beetle backend (inc engine) with fat foff tyres, mated to a rubber suspended Harley front with skinny rim. The rubber suspenders meant I couldn't get any feedback through the bars - but it didn't really make much difference, 'cos the front end was rarely in contact with the road. Walls, lamp-posts, 'phone boxes - anything in a straight line ahead - yes, road no.
The 650 setup you describe sounds much saner.
Lots and lots of sunny happy days.
Steve

Posted By Andrew Beveridge Try www.starcom1.com ~ their systems have worked very well for me in the past. I'm not sure if they can do the 3 way bit though. Have fun! Regards Andy

Posted By naomi Hi Linda
I own a Fazer 600 and by own admission not quite got the hang of it!!! Last week limped into a training room (I was delivering a course on Risk Management!!) and asked by the group what I had done. Sheepishly had to tell them I come off my motorbike the reaction?.... and you a safety officer!!! Girls just want to have fun (safety officers excluded I think)

Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi folks,
Update - not on the radio though, well sort of.
My eldest decided the trike is a bit boring and she wants music in her helmet. The youngest decided it would be much more cool to not have his PPE on - we had a bit of a battle - I won. Safety culture, start em young!
The trike certainly attracts attention, so if I ride slower, I can see who's looking at us, have time to check my mirrors to look at the kids and they can hear me when I tell my youngest to put his gloves back on. I am going to need elastic threading from one glove through his jacket to the other. Review the risk assessment! Arg.
I got the kids to tell grandad about the trike, but not grandma. Grandad wants a go behind grandma's back. LOL.
Regards.
Linda
