Posted By Alan Barthrope Can anybody advice on the correct route for disposal of metal working fluids/swarf. Our sub-contractors often produce these whilst using pipe threading machines on our construction sites, therefore quantities not as extensive as working with lathes, but still needs managing. I would be greatful if anybody has the name of any waste handlers that they have used for these fluids, which I assume will be classed as hazardous waste. I believe we are covered on the Safety front, but my concerns are for environmental management of the waste. Thanks in advance for any pointers. Alan B

Posted By Malcolm Fryer I am sorry to see that you have had such a poor response to your question. Whilst not an expert I would suggest that you look at the MSDS sheet about section 13 for the fluid being used for a hint about disposal methods. As to the swarf if it is thoroughly drained then probably disposal as scrap metal. Best to talk to your hazardous waste contractor about this once you have the information. Depending on the quantity you will probably have to register your site with the EA as a producer of hazardous waste. Life gets complicated for us safety practitioners who have to deal with environmental issues. I hope this is of assistance and not too late. Malcolm

Posted By Chris Packham Alan Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but was away from office for two weeks. Have you tried speaking to the metalworking fluid supplier. Usually they can advise and, often, can provide disposal of the fluid as a service. Since I assume you will be using water-mixed metalworking fluid, you will have something that is probably in excess of 90% water. There are systems that can remove the chemicals from the water so that this can be disposed of normally. The much smaller volume of chemical that then has to be removed means a considerable cost saving. If you wish to contact me off the chat forum to discuss options please feel free to do so.
