Dropped-in to the local s/mart this morning (name not allowed) to find they were pressure washing the foyer roof (floor area about 100 sq metre and height about 12 metre)....the entrance doors are in the foyer....customers entered by walking along the foyer edge while being dripped on by the water from the roof. The guy doing the washing (with the pressure lance) was using a cherry picker. No eye protection, no head protection and no restraints either. The customers, negotiating the extremely wet floor, where slipping and sliding everywhere.
So much for health and safety.

I hope you dropped an email to their head office?
I went the library the other day and there was an extinguisher propping open the main door - put their by contractors. I sent an email to the head librarian suggesting they look at staff training - (6 librarians in the foyer were oblivious to the problem) - asking them how they would find an extinguisher in an emergency when it is not in its place. I also suggested they review their arrangements for appointing and monitoring contractors. I received a polite email back promising to take action. It gave me a great sense of self righteousness! plus they got some free and slightly annoying consultancy advice.

Many supermarkets seem to be totally unaware of the issues involved in such things, particularly with regard to their lawful visitors, ie customers. I recently contacted one of the majors about young children being allowed to run amok in store without the staff challenging the parents. The response was along the lines of "It is all down to the parents and if you are injured you can sue them"!!!! Even a gentle reminder concerning Occupiers Liability Act failed to elicit further response.
The problem is endemic to large organisations who think they have tied everything up under contract or they believe all fault can be passed on

sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I didnt want to post in its own otpic as it aint worth it. Went to the leisure centre last night, asked if I could join and do induction so I could use the gym, they said no you just turn up and pay, no induction needed. Hmmmmm They have free weights, electronic running cycling machine, fixed weights benched with interchangable weight settings such as you find at your normal gym. I wonder why they are different and dont need to give inductions. I wonder who would be responsible if someone got injured whilst using the equipment?
Yet ourdoor shoes are not allowed to be worn inside the sports hall for safety reasons (dust / dirt makes the floor slippery) I guess when someone has an accident inductions will become mandatory for H+S reasons. Pc this is a local council owned leaisure centre (scotland if that makes a difference)

I worked as a H&S Co-ordinator for a UK wide retail chain. I came across a parent pushing one of those small trollies with his child of about 10/12 riding forward facing on the bottom. I approached the parent and told him that this was not acceptable practise and not to allow his child to do that. He was taken aback that and refused. I replied that if the child fell and hurt himself you would blame the store and would be claiming damages which is unaccaptable. He then told his child to get up.
Just to cover my back I mentioned this incident to my store manager. Back to the original point of the pressure washing, we held toolbox talks with all contractors that were working on site and made sure that all their safe systems of work were relevant to the task undertaken. if they failed to comply they would be taken off site.

Its a shame that not all store staff feel that it necessary to deal with parents who allow their 3/4 year old to take balls from a display and roll them around the floor. Still it was 9pm so perhaps the little people had been brought in to get rid of some energy before their bedtime!!!
