Dementia units - fire exit door operability v security of patients

Has anyone come across a design of security door lock that releases when the fire alarm isactivated but guards against unauthorised over-ride.
We have fire exits with key pads fitted. These are linked to, and deactivate, when the alarm detection system is activated and hence the door can be opened instantly, there is also an over-ride break glass. The problem is the over-ride has to be placed within a certain distance from the floor (DDA compliant?) and the dementia patients see ' Break Here for emergency exit' and do exactly that... going off on a wander.
I am sure there must be a simple answer to this... but it deludes me. Would be most grateful if anyone who has faced a similar problem could respond.

Hi Jenny,
There are locks with magnetically retained keepers; on the activation of the fire alarm the magnets release and the keeper will then pivot, allowing the door to be pushed open very easily. Chibb do them; other lock makers are available,

You'll find the kind of thing I mean if you click on 'door locks' on the following http://www.banham.com/; bear in mind though that loads of people provide this kind of thing and if you ring your local friendly locksmith they'll probably be able to help,

There are cover panels that you can get for fire alarm call points that set off a local alarm when they are lifted up to prevent inappropriate use.
I believe chubb fire do these along with many others i'm sure.
Maybe this will help as a deterrent or at least raise the attention of staff that someone is attempting to leave the building.
Hope this helps

the main problem is one of detection and locking doors in itself is not always the only solution. we use a system called wanderguard, which in effect is a type of tagging for the want of a better word. this system enables you to be alerted that a person has left the building and also lets you know the last known location.
Hope this helps

How about getting rid of the break glass units, and fitting the doors with delayed eggress panic hardware.
If there is no fire alarm and they push the door release an alarm will sound and the door will not open until they have pushed it for 15 seconds (or whatever time you set).
Obviously the system fails to safe and if there is an alarm activation there is no delay when the panic hardware is pressed, and the door will open.
This way you have an alarm localised to the door the resident is trying to get out of and 15 seconds to intercept...
