For the above, what is the Statutory requirement re inspection - I am led to believe it is a 6 monthly ispection by competent person? If so where in the regs does it say this? What about insurance companies - what do they require?

(We have a trained competent person who visually checks them all monthly, the user visually inspects before use).

Good question Gary

I have just applied LOLER principles in the past on lanyards (didn't use inertia reels), 6 monthly examination if it is protecting a person. Some insurance companies examine annually. And visual inspection before each use.

Have you had a look at indg367 (inspection of fall arrest equipment made from wire webbing or rope) available free from the HSE? It does not specifcally relate to inertia reels, but could provide a guide, and if you stuck to that i think you would be discharging your responsibility.
