Need some information regarding maintenance of some industrial gas ovens we have on a production line. Their purpose is to heat a chamber through which items pass through in order to heat seal the container. Currently, they are serviced by an external company and have been added to the PM schedule, however, although our technicians are electrically "competent", they have no training in gas maintenance of any kind and are expected to work on the components of the ovens when they fail. Can anyone shed any light on what training needs to be provided for our elctricians in order that they can work on these ovens in cases of breakdown and failures. Thanks !

My understanding is they would need to be CORGI registered.

I concur with Jim's statement and would also add that any non-qualified person working on gas appliances would render any form of company liability insurances totally invalid, and hence the company could be at risk of prosecution.
If your technically competent tradespersons are unable to move to the qaulifed CORGI standard, then you need to incorporate the servicing company in on a call out scheme for breakdown work to cover your insurers' requirements and satisfy risk assessments under "Competent Person" requirements.
Your managers and directors need to be informed (in writing - to cover your own position) of this legal requirement asap.

I recall a few years back questioning the legal position of people undertaking LPG Gas Conversions for cars and vans. At the time it was said that providing the person is familiar with that building and only operates from that building it does not come within the realms of CORGI and can be undertaken by a competent person as it falls within the scope of The Factories Act.
Whereas a gas service engineer goes from one location to another.
If in doubt contact CORGI http://www.corgi-gas-safety.com/
