We are a large Concrete pipe manufacturer who produce concrete units through a vibration process. the noise is not constant but intermitent throughout the day. Our production cycle has not changed, however we have recieved various complaints from a minority of villagers. we are about to carry out an environmental noise monitoring survey. we have taken on board what the locals have said and we have to work with them. I was just wondering if anyone out there have had or are having similar problems.

regards Ian.

Had a similar complaints from residents living close to a household waste site. Although the complaint was about general noise from the site the cause of complaint was found to be the loading shovel, when it was picking up and loading metal waste into the bulk container. Like your operation, it was the intermittant but sudden nature of the noise that caused the problem, they didn't notice the noise of the shovel working at other times.
The contractor had recently changed the site layout and was using the wall closer to the houses for this material. Moving the bay achieved a quick solution, but to further help reduce noise we also planted trees and shrubbery around the boundary fence.

Try contacting the RAF complaints (I think they can be found on-line through the .gov website).

They are always having complaints about their flying and have to do something.

Alternatively, contact the Army base at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain. They are in contact with their neighbours from the noise of the artillery.

Not sure about the Navy, don't know where their ranges are!!

Good luck.

I am an ex EHO and Nuisance Noise is probably the Biggest thing complained about.

Firstly - there is no defnce in law to say that 'you came to the nuisance!' I was here first. Townies complaining about farmyard cockerels waking then up in ther 'ouse in the country.

Secondly - It seems that you may be in a 'village' so the ambient background noise is far less than if you were in a built up area / city. So people are mre likely to hear it.

BS 4142 is the standard I think that is still used, this measures all the parmeters and gives you an indication of the likelyhood of getting noise complaints.

It is good that you get the locals involved as they will probaly not want you to 'leave' but work with you to reduce the noise. Once you have had this done you will have poked your head above the trench and if you share the results with the 'local shop for local people' you will need to be seen to be doing something - act on the findings.

Remember that it may only be a slight change required or building acoustic barriers or agree when the noisy activity can take place etc Not like one of my past MD's "lets put up six high lorry containers around the perimeter and paint em yellow!" How to influence friends etc etc
