Posted By JimGBL I'm pretty sure that there is not an international standard for marking floors with different colours in workshops but would appreciate anyone else's thoughts. Reason for this is that my company wants to set standards for workshop PPE requirements which will be signified by the colour of the floor you are walking on. Any help appreciated.

Posted By Bunny Not sure about a standard but I worked somewhere where the walkways where you didn't require PPE were green and when you stepped off that into areas that were compulsory PPE zones then the floor colour changed to red.

Posted By V Johnston Not aware of any standards but you need to consider people who cannot differentiate between certain colours e.g. red/green colour blindness.

Posted By Gilles27 Red double lines in hospital emergency traffic routes indicate no parking - tow away zone etc, so red floor e.g. 'important' would seem good idea. So long as folks understand what is required is what counts. As an aside, I understand hazard/yellow signs and lines on stair nosings etc. are yellow because with failing sight/partial sight most often yellow is the last colour visual definition that remiains. If somebody is partially sighted, chances are they will still be able to see yellow. Any truth in this?

Posted By Merv Newman Unless I am really out-of-date, safety signs and signalisations are based on a European Directive ED 232 (it could well have been updated since I last looked) There are no specific floor markings in there but yellow or yellow/black bands would be used to signal "permanant" dangers : risk of being hit by something swinging or falling, dock edges, stairs or steps, holes, crane lift areas. Where there is nothing that could be easily painted or "stuck upon" (building sites) then coloured ribbons may be used ; yellow = "authorised entry only", red = "access forbidden" Other than that, internal walkways are often painted blue or green, storage areas limited by black tape or paint, emergency equipment emplacements (and access to them from work area) are usually painted red. "Safe areas" ie around coffee machines, mess tables, notice boards are sometimes indicated by green tape. This means that even though the work area is 100% safety glasses, within the "green area" they may be removed. One last one which I've just remembered "noisy areas" can be delimited by blue or blue/white lines. I've seen that on a few chemical sites. Including painted around a telephone booth within a noisy area. And another one : a zone where only the operator was allowed had a black floor or border. I hope this helps. Any more examples out there ? Merv

Posted By Tabs Giles, I recently heard this quoted as the reason hazard labels and wet floor signs are yellow... I really think at best it is a happy co-incidence, and more likely an adoption of practice from elsewhere (since when was Euro-legislation ever that clever?)

Posted By JimGBL Thanks for all the responses.I did not think there was an international colour standard and this confirms it.
