Posted By James Andrew Scott With regards to assessments I wondered what others thought about this. We do comprehensive risk assessments which involve the use of chemicals in scientific procedures, we refer to the MSDS in this assessment and detail levels of PPE and any significant risks. My question is do we need to have a separate COSHH assessment as well as the detailed standard risk assessment? I am trying to avoid repetition if possible.

Posted By garyh I would refer to COSHH in your RA. I would make sure that it covers things like routes of exposure, also WELs and so on - not just info from the MSDS. Also cover your (hierarchy of) control measures, exposure monitoring and other occupational hygiene measures etc. Justify your PPE choice as against the better alternatives etc.
In short it will be a COSHH assessment by another name. In a previous life when I did this I had risk and COSHH assessments in a risk assessment register (actually a spreadsheet with links) and had COSHH assessments as a separate section of this. I would definitely not do it twice.

I would agree with Gary, an elegant practical approach.
Furthermore in my experience we found it difficult controlling new chemicals entering a research facility. Researchers always want the latest trendy wonder molecule, bless em.
This is merely a suggestion James you may not find this appropriate or necessary. The EHS department had to link up with our procurement dept to vito new chemistry on site. Basically the researcher came to us with their prepared risk/coshh assessment, we reviewed then signed it if happy and that allowed Procurement to buy it.
Sounds a bit long winded but it was simple enough and necessary in our case.
Have fun.
