Posted By Paulo Dinis Hi, I´ve made a search using "DIN 67510" expression, had and no response. Since i don´t have the standard with me, i only whant to know a basic aspect is some one can enlightened me. So DIN 6750 has 4 parts, as described bellow : DIN 67510-1, Publication date:2002-10 Photoluminescent pigments and products - Part 1: Measurement and marking at the producer DIN 67510-2, Publication date:2002-10 Photoluminescent pigments and products - Part 2: Measurement of phosphorescent products on site DIN 67510-3, Publication date:2004-07 Photoluminescent pigments and products - Part 3: Low location lighting system DIN 67510-4, Publication date:1996-07 Phosphorescent pigments and products - Part 4: Products for phosphorescent escape route system; markings and applications Concerning the Part 4, all tecnichal catalog mentioned the behavior of all "items"/products sold "measured" with that standard. I got an situation where some how a suplier of fire extinguers have convinced top management to "enrobe" all fire´s with phosphorescent material. Not literally, but "mark" the surrounding area with that material, tested acording to part 4 of quoted standard. Doesn´t sound much, just that the client has 89 unit´s on 2 sites location. Happens i was conducting an environmental noise surveys, measuring background noise ( so plant off ) at night. I´ve noticed that minimum light around is somehow considerable, therefore the eficiency of that kind of signs is not interesting. In other word, safety management tells me that´s not a "good penny spend in safety". So, can anyone tell me in what conditions are this material tested ? I mean regarding the environmental conditions of material testing described in part 4 of DIN standard ? Is it like in a ZERO LUX LABORATORY ENVIRONMENT, ie, total darkness ? Just that info is enought. Thanks in advance. Paulo Dinis Portugal

Posted By J J Creak Paulo, Din 67510 Part 1 is a test method and Part 4 some basic specification for luminance performance when exposed to activating illumination of 1000 lux for 5 minutes. Which means that subject to sufficient activation the product will give luminance values as specified over times 2 Minutes, 10 Minutes, 30 Minutes, 60 Minutes, and give an indication of final time taken to deminish to 100 times the threshold of the dark adapted eye. The characteristics you should evaluate is how the material behaves when energised at very low light levels.. say 50 lux for 15 Minutes which is more typical in positions where signs and markings are positioned in escape routes. This is a more exacting test for Photoluminescent materials as used in the New York Building Codes and Transport Specification ISO 15370. The marking of all Emergency equipment including Fire Fighting Equipment is determined by the formal risk assessment as required by Health and Safety Legislation. It is a requirement that this equipment is available under emergency conditions including power failure. The organisation has probably been informed that 80% of all fires are extinguished by portable fire extinguishers and that the location of this equipment is top priority if there is an expectation that the organisation requires immediate internal on site intervention to stop the spread and consequential business loss of a major fire. A recent survey by Essex Fire Authority found that 80% of staff surveyed were not aware of the location of fire fighting equipment. A risk assessment in these cases would show that it is required to make the position conspicuous, even under non emergency conditions. www.means-of-escape.com
