Posted By Alexander Falconer Looking for an example of a H&S Manual that follows the guidelines of OHSAS 18001/BS 8800 or similar My intention is to review this and identify how I could best approach writing one specific to my industry (Gas Heating Systems Installation, Maintenance & Sarvicing) It doesn't matter which industry it comes from, as their procedures/policies will be different to those applicable to our industry All I am interested is the format/layout Any suggestions welcomed -

Posted By George Wedgwood I think you are asking for a lot here Andrew and many consultants or others who put such Manuals together would not share such a large amount of information - learning and experience does come at a price! However, I have seen such a system and it was in Hong Kong so if you contact HK Branch, some kind employee of CLP Power(http://www.chinalightandpower.com.hk/NR/exeres/E671092D-4EE9-461A-A391-F520567B461E%2C31E0AC1A-BD84-490A-AC6D-BE1630AB9367%2Cframeless.htm?ch=%5FHK%5FCLPP%5F&lang=en) might just let you see an index page of Chapter titles - their system is based on the oil industry system and is audited under this standard - it is called "OIMS" - 'Operational Integrity Management System'. You can see their Annual Env/H&S Report at (http://www.chinalightandpower.com.hk/NR/exeres/6B21BF6D-F1F1-494A-9A88-5B79857A9037%2C31E0AC1A-BD84-490A-AC6D-BE1630AB9367%2Cframeless.htm?ch=%5FAbt%5FRes%5FPub%5F&lang=en#SER) It does not refer to OIMS but that is what they use and you could talk to Mr Poon Head of SHE. Regards, George

Posted By Alexander Falconer George I am not asking for your opinion, just asking for guidance. There are many consultancies out there who offer off the shelf H&S manuals as meeting criteria for OHSAS 18001, etc I could just go out and buy one, however not prepared to give them the money. Would also appreciate if you get my name right before you respond - indicates to me that you have not really bothered to read my thread, but just stick your tuppence worth.

Posted By Simon Carrier Alex If you are looking for a hard copy H&S manual I cannot help, however if you are looking for some guidance on putting together a soft copy "signpost" that enables you to demonstrate compliance to OHSAS18001 I may be able to assist. If this is what you require let me know. regards Simon

Posted By Robert K Lewis Alexander The standard manuals you will see around follow the specific clause headings of the standard or specification. Using these headings will enable you to force your current systems into the mould. The other route is to take your current management systems and map the clauses onto them. Some elements of your system may refer to more than 1 clause, so list them all. After that map out the clause items not covered and implement them into your system in an appropriate way. The matrix produced will act as a guide for auditors around your system. Remember it is for you to define your system and it is the auditors job to follow it, there is no fixed format that has to be followed. But as George said - consultants earn their bread and butter by undertaking such tasks, hopefully in an experienced and competent manner. I would tend to steer away from those offering standardised solutions unless they seem a close match to existing systems. Bob

Posted By Alexander Falconer Jai, I am all for constructive criticism. I took georges comments on board, but again, his comments whilst informative, were of no value to what I was asking for. When I reply to someones posting, I make sure that I give them what they ask for (and get their names right)

Posted By Alexander Falconer I never criticised Georges comments, merely stated that his comments were of no value, plus he got my name wrong. Thought we safety bunch were meticulous, in ensuring we get our facts right before making a comment?? I have the info I requested, therefore I see no more value in discussing the matter further - Thanks to those who responded.

Posted By JAI Whilst Alexander does not wish to discuss this point any further and he is entitled to his opinion I would like to say the following If you post a thread asking for help then you expect to get back various answers some helpful some not The information posted on the pervious thread by George was well thought of and he honestly thought he was offering help However this help was thrown back in his face on a minor technicality of getting a name wrong When I post a thread I normally thank people for their input and ignore those replies that have not helped So could we all in future not be as negative, this may stop people from taking the time to answer the threads There seems to be an issue with this site lately in terms to people’s attitudes (I will now return to my Ivory tower were i can give the orders out and take no notice of my staff because I am right and they are wrong) Jai

Posted By Alexander Falconer Once again someone putting their tuppence worth in! In my defence, I did not mean to be overcritical of Georges comments (and not on the technicality of getting my name wrong) - if this has been taken out of context then I apologise. Georges answer was not thrown back in his face, just pointed out that it was of no value to me. I don't have an attitude as someone kindly pointed out (first time in 15 years of HSE someone said this about me). The ultimate aim for me was to suss out the attitudes towards sharing of Management systems information - very closely guarded, especially from the consultancies themselves who put a price on them. Maybe I'll do the same, Anyone want assistance in implementing ISO 9000, ISO 14000, OHSAS 18000/BS8800, HACCP/ISO22000, BS 7799, QS 2000, etc, etc At a price! Regards ALEX (seasoned campaigner in writing policies, and manuals, as well as implementing management systems)

Posted By Merv Newman Ladies, gentlemen. Stop it. I very often reply to threads and, halfway through, forget the name of the person to whom I am replying. Who realy cares ? Look, they call me Merv, Marv, Melvyn, Merlin, Merwin, whatever. And thats only today. Actually, today, one of them adressed me as "Mister Newman" Quelle horreur ! This was a good thread which got lost in the recriminations. La politesse toujours. S'il vous plaît Merv
