Posted By Alan G Newell Can anyone assist me? We have got a staircase held up by four support bars which have one bolt (into the ground) to each bar. I have stated that I believe there should be two bolts to each bar, but I have been informed this is unsafe. Has anyone else had any such advise?

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Can you put more description of the stair support make up -ie square section with flat plate fastenings, or round tubular sections, sizes of uprights etc? Is site access to work a problem for fixings? What is the floor material? Required weight bearing of the staircase?

Posted By Martin Taylor On the face of it the more bolts the better I would think - (although it is a bit difficult ot picture from your description). I fail to see how more bolts would make the arrangement unsafe! Martin

Posted By David Bramall Alan, Don't even try to assume something like this, I don;t exactly know the problem but it does sound like a structural engineering problem. The fact that, as a H&S professional, you have identified a potential problem, is commendable but please do not try to assume a role which you are not qualified to take on. OK you may be a fully qulaified struct eng, if so design or assess what is required, if not simply inform your manager, director, CE etc. that a structural assessment is required to ensure that the structural integrity of the stairway is adequate. Hope this helps! Regards DrB
