Posted By Jonathan McCoy Hello all, Just wondering what ye're views are on persons reporting that they had an accident on the day after they alledgedly had it. Had a guy who called his supervisor on Friday last and said he was unable to attend work due to him having an accident in work the day before. our company policy states that all accidents / incidents / near misses should be reported immediately. Would appreciate your views or experiences. Thanks !

Posted By Chrisinwood In my experiance this is quite a common occurence, i find that most of the time it occurs with agency staff on site who are trying it on. However other times it can be quite genuine. My way of trying to make sense of what has actually happened and whether it is genuine or not, is to look at the type of injury the person is claiming they have had, who they are (direct or sub contract etc) what their line manager thinks of them (attitude to work etc). These together usually give you an indication of whether it is likely to be a genuine accident or whether they are just looking for a long weekend off! Obviously the above is ONLY an indication so you do need to tread carefully. However as you mentioned your policy does state that all accidents etc should be notified immediately. If they have failed to report an accident and there is no reasonable explanation for this then they have clearly gone against your policy and could be subject to disciplinary action especially if you feel the claim was not genuine. Let me know what you find out, a last point is if your unsure tread carefully and follow the company procedures making sure no wild accusations are made
