Posted By Eric McCann Hi Everyone I am just preparing a presentation for my board and (as you have all guessed I work in a large bank) I would like to put some information regarding hse action against banks and FI's but alas cannot find any, and I know that they must be out there. I understand that there are lots of cases settled out of court but never the less would like to be able to quote a few recent examples. Therefore being able to push the need for investment in H&S Does anyone have any such examples (last couple of years) Thanks Eric

Posted By John Watson Eric, cannot help but would add some interesting background. I worked for a major bank for 20 years in various roles (Non H&S related) and their attitude to H&S was (and remains) scandalous. No training for managers in their responsibilities, no training for staff apart from watch the old crappy videos about trips and slips (irrelevant to the audience at the time). I worked from home, no one ever visited my office to check compliance with anything, and in 12 years of this role my electrical equipment was tested once. I think large banks take the view that they have such deep pockets they can make any problem that occurs go away by throwing money at it in compensation (just look at the pensions review cost) but this does not help if you are the possibly seriously injured or dead party. In closing I would add that on of my friends wife still works for a major bank (different to my old employer) who got an interview for a Senior H&S post despite having absolutely no knowledge or experience of H&S. It beggars belief. Regards John

Posted By Ron Hunter Consider extending your presentation to include discussion of Corporate Social and Moral Responsibility? Large banks and financial institutions are involved in delivery of major construction projects (inc PFI/PPP)as Client or via an appointed Client Agent, and derive profit or income thereby. What standards are set (and monitored) for health, safety and welfare performance of all the other parties involved? Look at some of the higher profile prosecutions on large projects. Is there a large financial institution 'hiding' in the background as part of a Partnership or other Special Purpose Organisation?

Posted By Sheila EJ Keogh hey guys, pls don't tar all banks with the same brush. international bank (IFI) i used to work in takes H&S very seriously, and we worked all bloomin' hours and were on 24 hour call to ensure that wherever in the world they were, the bankers could contact us for help or advice, and to ensure the huge workload got done. A v. good safety culture still exists there.

Posted By John Doe Eric, I can't recall any criminal actions against banks but I do recall a number of Barclays Bank employees were successful in a civil case in connection with Work Related Upper Limb disorders. Maybe a google's in order.

Posted By Ron Young Here's the database of court cases on ULD's. You will need to register. It has details of the Barclays case mentioned and others. http://www.humanetechnol....uk/registered/intro.php
