Posted By sfinch with ref to HSCER1996, we have tried to set up a H&S committee, but had no volunteers, is it suitable to consult staff directly without the need of a committee. We have approx 140 employees in an office environment. any advice appreciated

Posted By Graeme Have a browse through these below Safety Committee/ Safety Representative regulations 1977 Health and Safety (employee consultation) Regulations 1996 HSG 65 - Successful Health and Safety Management and to some extent HSG 48 Influencing behaviour - Reducing error I could talk allday about employee consultation and the benefits, technique etc.....your best bet is just to have a quick read through some of the document listed above and you will have a much better understanding

Posted By Ron Hunter I would suggest that H&S issues can be consulted on and briefed within your existing frameworks for Team Briefings etc.The law allows for collective and individual consultation. You've tried, and no-one has come forward. Perhaps this in itself may tell you something about the under-pinning H&S culture within your organisation? It may be worth considering a 'climate survey' to gauge employee attitudes and beliefs about H&S in their workplace.

Posted By garyh This is an issue almost everywhere - in my experience safety committees are rarely effective, they often end up as a moaning forum which gives more work to Safety personnel! Usually the only members of the workforce who attend are the whingers......... A thought; if it is an office environement, why not try an e-mail aproach? Or an online forum where people can post issues and questions etc perhaps anonymously. Another approach which works is to incorporate it into another forum - eg if there is a regular workforce consultation, announce at the end "now for a quick review of safety issues". Or, create a workplace forum, with safety as one area for discussion -include other items which are more "interesting" - eg a regular company communications meeting.

Posted By Lilian McCartney I've been at a few safety committees and you can make them work depending on who goes and how its chaired/run, so don't give up trying on some sort of committee. In the meantime, other suggestions above would work or you could try particular subject 'working' groups' and approach people who have shown an interst in that subject. An idea to get people interested in a safety commitee is to give an info leafelt on their role and time involved as sometimes this can make poeple not want to volunteer if they think they are going to be more responibisle or it will take too much time.
