Imagine my surprise when I found out the firm we are using to vet our contractors, is actually requiring the firms to pay for their own vetting (thats in addition to us paying a fee) - this went down about as well as a bucket of swans heads at a vegetarian BBQ.....
my advice: I am sure it is legal and acceptable practice, but if you are considering using a third party to vet your contractors - read the small print very, very well.

How much do you pay them to vet one potential contractor - the answer might provide a clue to why they have to charge the contractor as well!

Jez,
I presume from your post that your small print did tell you that the vetting company would be charging the contractors.

We had this a few years back when a local authority told us that we had to be vetted by a third party and pay for the privilage.
This is dispite the company having worked for the council for many years.
The joy of Council Charters!!!

Restrictions applied by Section 22(1) of the Local Government Act 1998 prevent Local Authorities from levying such charges. Assessment via a third party doesn't escape that restriction. You might want to raise that with the LA's legal department?
