Guidance in HSE Specialist Inspector Report no 15 “Design Loadings for Temporary Roof and Floor Edge Protection” indicates that for a roof with a pitch (ie slope) of up to 10 degrees, a free standing temporary roof edge protection structure should be capable of withstanding a point load of 0.7kN without fracture or disconnecting. The author of SIR15 explained to me that this is basically looking at loading of just over two thirds of 100kg body weight. Comparable with U.S requirement that a guard-rail should be able to withstand 250lb force, equivalent 0.89kN - have to bear in mind that average U.S. construction worker somewhat heavier than U.K. counterpart.
